We follow a Total Communication approach, which means finding and using the right combination of communication methods for each individual.
This ensures meaningful connections, successful interactions, and effective exchanges of information.
We support children across all three curriculum pathways – Pre-Formal, Semi-Formal, and Formal – using a wide range of communication strategies tailored to their needs.
These include:
- Objects of reference, pointing, body language, vocalisations
- Symbols, written word, communication books, aided language displays
- Signing (Makaton friendly school) and speech
- High augmentative devices when appropriate
Our aim is for every child to:
- Understand the world around them
- Communicate their needs effectively
- Engage in positive social interactions
- Develop flexible thinking and broaden their interests
- Be prepared for adulthood
Our dedicated Communication Team works closely with class staff and external professionals such as speech and language therapists to support our children’s communication journey.
- Kelly – Communication Manager and SENCo, ensuring EHCP communication outcomes and provision are met across the school.
- Zoe – Communication Lead and experienced class teacher, supporting curriculum delivery and communication development.
- Tessa– Communication Intervention Lead, delivering tailored interventions across classes and leading our popular Choir, which perform in the community and at Lichfield Cathedral. Tessa also leads whole class, small groups, and individual sessions, working closely with class teams to create personalised resources and strategies.
- Donna – Makaton Lead and accredited tutor, providing staff training and running workshops for parents and carers.
The team also works in close partnership with our speech and language professionals:
- Cathy – Private Speech and Language Therapist, employed two days a week, offering specialist input for targeted children.
- Annie & Kendall – NHS Speech and Language Therapists, supporting students on the NHS caseload through assessment, strategy implementation, and staff collaboration. They are currently completing a whole-school audit to ensure progression in communication and interaction, and are actively supporting and modelling strategies for teaching staff.
