Research at Rocklands

At Rocklands, our pedagogical approach is rigorous and informed by the latest educational research which is tailored to meet the needs of our learners within all departments. By embedding evidence-based strategies into our curriculum design, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive in a motivating and engaging environment.

Why Research Matters to Us

Educational research provides us with the tools and insights to create learning experiences that are effective, inclusive, and impactful. For pupils with additional needs, research helps us understand developmental pathways, cognitive processes, and the importance of early foundations in learning. This knowledge, shaped in collaboration with our staff, families, therapists and wider professions, is the building blocks for our plan, teach and assess cycle.

How We Apply Research

Continuous professional development keeps our staff updated on emerging research, while regular monitoring and data analysis help evaluate impact and refine practice. Rocklands ‘Big Three’ (linked to school improvement) are discussed/acted upon frequently with all staff to sustain successful implementation.

By integrating research at every stage, we are able to create an active cycle where decisions are informed, teaching is responsive, and outcomes are continually improved.

  • Be Developmental: Learning progresses through carefully planned stages, ensuring pupils’ progression and achievement remains at a pace that suits their individual needs.
  • Be Responsive: Ongoing assessment informs teaching, allowing us to adapt in real time.
  • Be Multi-Sensory and Practical: We use concrete resources, real-life contexts, and sensory experiences to make learning meaningful.
  • Total Communication – Every learning opportunity supports language development and alternative communication systems.
